samba

die webseite wird heute *live geschaltet* und ich bin in sao paulo.

i had set my alarm for a 14 hour flight on monday morning, 3.15AM, but the taxi driver was quicker than my alarm. he called me at 2.49AM to confirm the taxi for 4AM.
4AM. at this ungodly hour, i'm on my feet but i'm not awake. my body works mechanically but my senses are numb. i sit in the car feeling like i'm wrapped in cotton wool. but london is great at this hour. no traffic, no overwhelming humanity on the streets, just a few night owls, night workers, and people who need to go somewhere like me. we have the city to ourselves. it's great.
the flight was bearable. i watched what felt like 10 films. thank god for airbus planes, where you have a little screen in the seat in front of you and can put together your own show. finally saw the english patient, with some dramatic plane crashes that interestingly were not edited out of the in-flight version. only interrupted by my falling asleep and the blond klm women trying to feed me every 2 hours.
i was welcomed at the airport by the most beautiful sunset i have ever seen. maybe it's the smog that makes the sun look so big and fire red. i'm such a romantic.
now i'm in sao paulo! which is like a latin manhattan. sky scrapers, smog, incredible traffic. plus the famous favelas, which are barely more than wooden huts beside the motorway. from what i could see when i peeked into the nonexistent windows, all huts have tvs, fridges, fans... all mod cons. the government tried many times to move the residents, favelitos?, to stone and concrete houses, but they refused. they liked where they were and basta. these guys know what matters - location location location!
temperature sao paulo: 29 celsius, winter.
temperature london: 26 celsius, summer.

it's coming up 8AM now, it's tuesday, and i'm getting ready for work.
