terraced houses, potted trees

i was told that i write too much in german, and that some of you get tired of using the leo dictionary link on the right >>
well, folks, most of the people who read this, or so i hope, are german. but since most of them can read english, i take your point.

this question goes to my english visitors: hello there. how come all georgian terraced houses in london, at least the posh ones, have the same kind of potted tree on their balconies? sometimes even in miniature on the window sill. to complete the ensemble i guess. like balloons or green lollipops they sway in the wind. is this the english answer to german balkongeranien?

most grateful for an answer. or a creative attempt.
